Lower Blepharoplasty

Lower blepharoplasty is a minor plastic surgery procedure to improve the physical appearance of the lower eyelid from aging signs such as saggy, wrinkled and baggy lower eyelids.

Most people who may need to do eyelid surgery tends to look younger, as one of the common procedure for lower eyelid surgery is cutting out some saggy wrinkled skin and excessive fat that leaves unwanted eye bags, making it even and lifted. Patients who are likely at the age of 40 years old and above are the potential candidates for this operational procedure. As the main purpose is to DEFY AGING and LOOK YOUNGER as much as possible in a natural way.

Although, some younger age such as late 20s up to late 30s have some similar complains about saggy eye bags, sometimes makes the under eyes look darker and gives out tired expression. The technique that is best applied for this kind of condition is the “FAT CONSERVING” lower blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery. This technique from the word itself will not remove the fat under the eyes rather reposition it on the inner socket close to the nose bridge, which this part is usually shallow and deep, more space for extra fat to be filled. The purpose of this technique is to conserve the fat for future use, because an individual has a tendency to lose some fats in the face such as the cheeks area, temples, nasolabial and the under eyes. If he/she has a typical procedure for lower eyelid surgery during his/her younger years, and the fats are not there anymore, it will definitely make his/her eyes sunken and older than their age and the solution to fill in those hallow eye bags is fat filler with stem cell which is a higher cost and more aggressive than just redoing the lower eyelid surgery.

The incision area for lower eyelid surgery is just below the lower conjunctiva securing it with stitches at the inside part and make few stitches on the outside making it look presentable and beautiful even during the recovery days, making the patient feel not scared of his/her looks during those adjusting times.

DRK surgeons have a special signature BLOODLESS technique that ensures no occurrence of blood loss or bleeding to the patient during the surgery. This bloodless technique protects the patient from any harm and complications further after the operation. Being said so, it minimizes the swelling, bruises and downtime for the patient which leads to fast and safe recovery time.

Things to prepare before the surgery:

  1. The patient must not smoke or drink any alcohol beverages at least a week before the surgery.

  2. Must stop taking supplements and vitamins containing Vitamin E and C, also with fish oil. These substances will make the blood thinner thus causing bleeding and bruising during and after the surgery.

  3. Should not take any aspirin, ibuprofen and pain medications like such at least 2 days before the surgery.

  4. Provide medical history for some drug allergies, and so the medical provider can prescribe different medication during and after the surgery.

  5. Alert your doctor if you have some heart problems, lung problems or neurological and physiological health conditions that must be attended carefully.

How to take care of yourself after the surgery:

> In ideal cases, lower eyelid surgery is an out-patient department that needs no hospital admission when all goes stabilized and normalize after sending the patient to recovery area for few minutes. The recovery days are done at home, here’s how you can make yourself better:

  1. Elevate head while sleeping for 3-5 days, this will help reduce swelling.

  2. Apply some cold packs 15-30mins with 30mins-1hr interval on the 1-3 days after the surgery.

  3. Take your home medications religiously.

  4. Keep the incision area dry, wash your face or clean it with sponge avoiding the lower eye area.

  5. Rest or stay at home for 3-5 days, rest it the best rehabilitation for all surgeries.

6. Stitch off if needed will be done 5-7days from the surgery day, depending on the doctor’s advise.

Results may be seen on the 2nd-4th week when the swelling are completely subsided and scar are almost invisible to see.

***Recovery time or rehabilitation depends on the patients coping mechanism, although DRK staff will guide you all throughout your recovery process to make your recovery easy and comfortable***

After a thorough assessment on the lower eyelid condition. Not all patients will have the same technique as the other. Lower blepharoplasty has various techniques that only DRK surgeons can perform appropriately. These techniques are:

  1. Cut off a portion of excessive skin on the lower eyelid that is causing the eyelid to wrinkled and sag.

  2. Cut of a portion of excessive skin and adequate fat on the lower eyelid that is causing the eyelid droop.

  3. Repostioning the fat in the lower eyelid to the shallow part of the lower eyelid filling the pit space and making it more balance and smooth. This technique is called "FAT CONSERVING TECHNIQUE".

Preparations:
  1. No Smoking and drinking of alcohol for at least 2 weeks prior surgery

  2. Stop taking medicines such as aspirin and the like.

Note:

For foreigner patients, they must stay at least 7 days after the surgery. In this case, the doctor and DRK team can monitor the recovery process and make sure that the patient is safe to go back home in their country or designated country without any complication from the surgery.

One of the downsides of aging is the premature sagging of the upper eyelid. This can, however, be fixed by redesigning the eyelid and making the eye appear brighter and younger. We recommend that patients over the age of 40 be assessed with the scans as follows prior to the procedure:

  1. CBC

  2. FBS

  3. EKG

Recovery Period : 5 to 7 days
